Curriculum

Step by Step provides high quality, specialised teaching for autistic children.

Step by Step believes that:

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum provision is pupil-centred and highly personalised. We aim to ensure that the learning experience at Step by Step is positive, exciting and meaningful for each individual learner.

Our specialised curricula focuses on a wide range of developmental areas, as well as differentiated aspects of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum, as well as ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) and AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) courses.

Step by Step School have designed a functional curriculum that meets the needs of all of our pupils, and can be tailored to suit individual strengths and abilities. The skills we teach are relevant, accessible, functional and motivating.

Primary Curriculum

Our curriculum is taught through a combination of individual, paired and small group teaching and accommodates the learning styles and communication systems of all pupils.

We use visual aids, sign language and reinforcement (reward) systems in different situations to enhance the delivery of the curriculum.

As primary pupils progress through school, activities within the daily timetable place greater emphasis on community access and integration, independence, developing self-care, daily living skills and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Secondary Curriculum

Our Secondary curriculum is based on the premise that every pupil will be provided with the skills necessary to live, work, socialise and pursue hobbies and recreational activities in the community to the very best of their abilities.

The overriding aim of our Post 16 provision is to provide the necessary teaching and learning opportunities for every student to make a successful transition into adult life. This includes an increased focus on vocational skills and work experience.

School enrichment opportunities are also a large part of our curriculum (such as: Comic/Sport Relief, World Book day and Children in Need), and are recognised and celebrated collaboratively across all phases of the school.
All pupils take part in a wide range of weekly onsite and/or offsite PE lessons. We offer a broad range of activities for example: Basketball, Circuits, Yoga, Nature exploration, Team games, and Athletics run by an in-house PE teacher.

Through our Curriculum, we aim to maximise the potential of pupils with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) through evidence based, individually tailored, outstanding teaching to enable them to thrive and live happy, confident lives.
