Maths & Numeracy

At Step by Step School, the teaching of numeracy skills provides pupils with a foundation for their learning and supports them to develop independent living skills such as, telling the time and understanding and using money. Numeracy is an important area of learning and can lead to the development of more complex skills such as logical thinking and reasoning.

Maths and numeracy is embedded throughout pupils’ individualised programmes as well as taught during small group sessions, where these skills are taught in motivating and functional ways. For example, pupils have a range of opportunities to develop their numeracy skills when out in the community (e.g., paying for food in the supermarket and measuring wood to saw at woodwork) or measuring out ingredients when cooking lunch at school.

All numeracy targets are individualised according to each pupil’s level of understanding and their needs, preparing them for life beyond Step by Step. For some pupils, this may include working towards AQA Maths Unit Awards and Entry Level Maths.
