Step by step school

Step by Step is a small independent day school for pupils with autism. We provide specialised teaching for Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form pupils, aged 4 to 19, who have an autistic diagnosis.

School history

In 2000 a small group of parents with autistic children, in and around the Crowborough area, were put in touch with each other through a common interest of wanting to create a learning environment for their children.

About autism

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability. It is the result of a neurological condition which affects how the brain processes information – in particular, it can affect communication and social interaction.

5 priority learning areas

As part of our curriculum we focus on 5 key areas of learning. The school uses a range of measure to assess the progress of the pupils in these areas. For more information on our priority learning areas, you can click on any of the active links. We change our feature presentation each term.

Life at our school

Provision Overview

Step by Step School was established in 2004 with the aim of providing high quality, specialised teaching for children with Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC). Through the delivery of  teaching (based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis) pupils receive highly individualised, autism-specific input devised to meet each of his or her personal needs.

Our school has Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form Classes of mixed ages and abilities. Each class is overseen by a Class Leader, with the assistance of a Lead Tutor. Each pupil is allocated a ‘key worker’, who is responsible for the day to-day organisation of his or her program. Qualified behaviour analysts oversee individual programmes. We are currently registered for 40 pupils from aged 4-19.

In addition to receiving individualised teaching/support, pupils receive daily, small group teaching, delivered by our teachers, therapists and class staff.
